Timber Deck Frames Have a Lot of Problems. Most Deck Builders Just Don't Tell You Upfront.

Timber deck frames fail. They warp in Sydney’s heat and humidity. They attract termites. They rot if drainage isn’t perfect under the deck, and in many gardens it never is. Unless you’re lifting boards and checking underneath regularly, you often don’t know how bad it’s gotten until the damage is already significant.

A lot of builders still default to timber because it’s familiar and cheap upfront. But the long-term cost, through annual pest treatments, staining and sealing the subframe, and eventually replacing bearers or joists that have given out, adds up considerably.

Steel framing is a better answer for homeowners who want a deck they don’t have to babysit. It’s what we specialise in.

What Steel Frame Decking Actually Is

The frame, sometimes called metal deck framing, is the part of your deck you never see once it's finished, but it's the most important part. It's what holds everything level, stable, and safe over the long term.

With steel frame decking, the substructure, meaning the joists, bearers, and posts, is built from light gauge, cold-formed galvanised steel instead of timber. The decking boards on top can be whatever you like: composite, hardwood, HardieDeck fibre cement, or a combination. The steel frame underneath does the heavy lifting.

Cold-formed steel is shaped at room temperature, which increases its structural integrity. It’s galvanised to resist corrosion and rust, and it’s non-combustible, which makes it the material of choice for decks in bushfire-prone areas.

Why Steel Framing Is Worth It

No Termites, No Rot, No Warping

Steel doesn't attract pests. It doesn't absorb moisture. It won't twist or sag over time the way timber can, particularly on sites with drainage challenges or in coastal and high-humidity environments. Once the frame is in, it stays exactly as it was built.

    Lower Lifetime Cost

The upfront cost of steel framing is comparable to quality hardwood. Over the life of the deck, it works out cheaper. No pest treatments, no repainting or restaining the subframe, no replacing a bearer that's softened. The ongoing maintenance cost is effectively zero.

The Right Choice for Bushfire Zones

Steel is non-combustible, which makes it one of the most important materials for any deck in a BAL-rated area. If your property is in a bushfire-prone zone, steel framing isn't just a good idea. For many BAL ratings, it's what the regulations under AS 3959-2009 require.

Works on Any Site, Any Layout

Steel framing, or steel structure deck construction, is lighter than equivalent timber sections and easier to engineer for difficult terrain. Whether your block is steeply sloping, has awkward geometry, or needs a cantilever or split-level design, steel gives us the flexibility to build what you actually want, not just what's easiest to throw up.

What Goes on Top Is Entirely Up to You

A steel subframe can carry any decking board material. The choice of what you see from above is independent of what's holding it up underneath. The most common options we work with:

Composite Decking (Trex and similar brands)

Low maintenance, resistant to fading and splintering, and available in a wide range of colours and timber-look finishes. Very popular for family entertainer decks. No oiling or sanding required.

Hardwood Timber (Spotted Gum, Merbau, Blackbutt and others)

If you want the warmth and texture of real timber on the surface, we can pair it with a steel frame for a hybrid solution. You get the traditional look without the maintenance headache of a full timber subframe underneath.

    HardieDeck Fibre Cement

James Hardie's HardieDeck product is non-combustible, making it suitable for properties with BAL ratings where combustible board materials are not permitted. Clean lines, contemporary look, low maintenance.

    Recent Steel Frame Projects

    Steel Frame Deck, Northern Beaches

A galvanised steel-framed deck on a coastal property at the Northern Beaches. Salt air and sun exposure made timber framing a poor long-term choice. We used light gauge galvanised steel joists and bearers throughout, with a composite decking board finish in a dark coastal tone. Split-level layout, custom balustrade, built on a sloping block.

Steel Frame and Hardwood Hybrid, Hills District

A large entertaining deck for a family home in Castle Hill. The client wanted the natural warmth of spotted gum timber boards on the surface but was done with the maintenance of a full timber frame after their previous deck. Steel subframe throughout with hardwood spotted gum decking on top: the look they wanted without the upkeep they didn’t.
